Why is Bush demanding retro-active telecoms surveillance cover?

Some folks may not realise this but the Administration is currently demanding that Congress pass an unconstitutional law to try to get retroactive legal cover Telecoms violations under FISA law both after
and before 9/11.

According to Barbara Honnegger,

It is primarily President Bush Bush, not the IT companies, who is pushing for retroactive immunity.

The carriers have told Congressional Democrats that they believe they're already protected under existing law. Their attorneys have read the Constitution and are fully aware that any such law would be overturned by the strict constructionist Supreme Court.

emember what happened to the Stalinists when Kruschev came to power (mock trials over Siberian gulags etc). Way I see it either Bush is literally protecting his own ass or he's demanding unconstitutional laws get passed just for the fun of it. Trying to set a precedent for future action maybe?

Dude, get over it. Bush is not Hitler, Stalin, or Ghengis Khan.
The people that spend so much time equating Bush with Pol-Pot, etc. are utterly trivializing real fascists. And stop trying to compare 2007 America to pre-war Germany -- it's retarded and indicates a profound lack of context.

"Oh, no, he's monitoring our communications! That's like killing 2 million in a purge, or gasing tens of millions!" Uh, not exactly. What kind of alternative universe do these people come from where Bush is Stalin, Jews are Nazis, and the U.S. is a fascist regime that was behind 9-11?

Finally, nobody cares about all the worthless conversations a bunch of dweebs are having about their new piercings or the latest version of Halo. What we do need to care about is the terrorists that want to kill more of us, and their use of our freedoms to plan such attacks. And since we haven't been attacked since 9-11, I guess the surveillance is working.

wow an actual comment.. i actually agree with you in places, comparisons with pre-war germany do show a lack of understanding of history... otoh in this particular piece i was actually comparing with time when Stalinists were kicked out and the releatively saner Krucschev came to power.. so not the whole 'comparison to the Holocaust' thing.. mind you im not sure you got that difference since you were busy knee jerk reactionaring.. but uhm at least you commented so thanks! ;-)_
